Skill

Skill is the most important factor in combat.

In the Black Desert, you can learn more skills as your level goes up. Through monster hunting, and completing quest reward, you can learn all the skills since you can constantly get Skills EXP points.

However, it is not easy to obtain enough skill points. As your level goes up, the kinds of skills you can learn increase, but it is difficult to obtain enough skill points.

In addition, as you gain skills points, the experience required to get more gradually rises. So we recommend you to find out what kind of skills the character has and which skills will be useful.

Learning Skills

Skill points needed for obtaining skills can be basically earned through combats.

You can earn a small amount of experience through life skills, or by completing some quests.

There are several ways to learn skill points.

1. When you are at a level where you can learn the relevant skill, you will automatically acquire the first level skill automatically.

2. Open the skill menu (Hotkey K) and left click on the skill you wish to learn.

3. Talk to skill instructor at a city and learn skills.

※ If you are able to learn skills, click the 'knife and shield crossed' icon.

The number of skills that you can learn will be displayed.

▲ The location of the skill instructor that you visited once will be displayed on the map.

▲ When you are ready to learn skills, 'knife and an axe crossed' icon will be displayed.

After level 56, when you complete the awakening quest through the Black Spirit, you can use awakening weapon to earn awakening skills that you can perform stronger attacks with.

You can earn awakening skills after completing awakening quests,

And even if you become a level where you can learn the skills, first level skill doesn’t get learned automatically.

Skill Types

Skills are divided into two types: Active and Passive.

Active skills can be used via hotkeys or by inserting commands,

And passive skills are skills where the effects can be applied just by learning it.

Some skills cannot be placed in the quick slot, so it is important to familiarize yourself with commands to active those skills.

※ In addition, there are hidden commands, and if you activate the skill through hidden command, it activates in a different way from existing form.

▲ If the word 'Quick Slot Available' does not show, it can be only used through command.

You can use most of the skills on horseback.

In order to have horseback combat, you must put on ‘stirrups’ on the horse.

The command for skills on horseback might be a little bit different from being on the ground, so it is useful to read the skill description.

Be cautious when learning skills!

As you gain skills points, the experience required gradually rises as well. If you learn the skills you can learn right away, you may have to fight with low-level skills to hunt monsters. Therefore, you need to check what kind of skills your character has and learn them more effectively. Through skill descriptions and videos you can learn which skill you need to focus on and finish your own skill tree.

Skill Window

Press K on your keyboard to view the Skill window.

In this window, you view skill demos on the left-side and the skills themselves on the right-side. Succession, Awakening, Talent, or Ascension skills can be accessed from the top-right of the screen once you’ve completed the respective classes’ corresponding quests. However, you can still view the main, awakening, and skill enhancement categories through ② regardless of whether or not you completed the quests.

On the skill demo screen, you can read the detailed skill description and select the skill icon or the playback button at the bottom of the skill demo screen to view a video demonstration of the skill. Of course, you can also mouse over the skill icon to see the skill description as well.

If you don’t want to see the skill demo screen, you can toggle it on/off with the “Toggle Skill Demo Screen” button.

You can also playback the skill demos or reset the camera viewpoint with the “Play Skill Demo” and “Reset Camera” button at the bottom of the skill demo screen.

The skill window’s main weapon skills are divided into main, secondary, and passive skills. You can press each categories’ title bar to view or hide the skills.

Left-click a skill icon to learn the skill, and Shift + Left-click a skill icon to learn the skill’s max level. Characters under lv. 56 can freely reset all learned skills, and you can reset an individual skill by right-clicking the skill’s icon or shift+right click to reset the skill to level 1.

- The “Black Spirit’s Rage” and “Skill Cooldown Slot” button in the lower-right of the skill window allow you to disable Black Spirit’s Rage for individual skills and set a skill to appear in the cooldown slots on your combat UI.

Skill Preset

The skill preset is a feature that allows you save your currently learned skills and skill add-ons. You can get more skill preset slots by using the Skill Preset Coupon. Two Skill Preset Coupons can also be obtained as rewards for completing each character’s Awakening and Succession quest (Talent/Ascension for Shai/Archer).

If you’ve already completed the Awakening/Succession/Talent/Ascension quest, you can accept the “[Skill Preset Coupon] Using a Variety of Skills” quest from the Black Spirit to get a Skill Preset Coupon.

The Skill Preset save feature can be used wherever, whenever, but you’ll need the Secret Book of Old Moon or a Skill Instructor to load a saved skill preset.

There’s a 10 minute cooldown time if you load a skill preset with a Skill Instructor, and a 1 hour cooldown time with a Secret Book of Old Moon. In addition, you can only load a skill preset at a Safe Zone when using a Secret Book of Old Moon.

Lastly, your character will perform an animation when loading a saved skill preset.

Skill Effect

If you read the skill description, you can see that many skills have notations of additional effects. These effects enable you to continue the combat in a more convenient and stable manner.

For example, a skill with a 'Down Attack' can cause additional damage if you use it after the enemy is down. This is the same theory with damage increasing when you make a BACK ATTACK at the back of the enemy. So if you know what skill has which effect, you can cause even more damage using the same skill. In addition to the increasing damages in certain situations, there is also a way to neutralize the enemy in various forms. You can stun your enemy so that it can’t do anything for a short period of time, or you can try DOWN ATTACK effect after making it fall down. By combining these effects, you can defeat your enemies more efficiently.

The following statement indicates the skill effects available in the Black Desert.

BACK ATTACK

When attacking an enemy from behind, 120% of the damage is applied. 150% is applied to monsters.

Using skills

You can use most of the active skills with commands, featuring a dynamic combat as a console game.

If you want to feel the dynamic and active control of the game, use commands instead of using skills which are in the quick slot. If you want to play the game comfortably, you can drag the skills into the quick slot and enjoy the game.

As for some skills, using hotkeys and commands might have slightly different effects. (When using command, some skills have faster activation speed)

If you use command instead of using skills in the quick slot, there is also a slight reduction in the consumption of skill assets (WP, MP, SP).

Also, thanks to the smooth combo skills, the adventurer scan experience the real fun of the combats.

Skills which can be used in combo mode will be displayed on the 'Action Combo Guide' on the right side of your character. By using the gamepad, you can enjoy the feeling that matches your taste through the shortcut key setting.

▲ Menu (shortcut key ESC) - When you go into UI editing, you can turn on and off the action combo guide.

▲ When you turn on the action combo guide, you can see the commands of the skills currently available in real time.
